Being obese prevents your pet being the dog it was meant to be. Unfortunately, owners are often the last people who recognize the problem and take action.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Realize that your dog is obese<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than half the dogs and cats in the US are overweight, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/petobesityprevention.org\/2016\">2016 clinical survey<\/a> done by the <a href=\"https:\/\/petobesityprevention.org\/\">Association for Pet Obesity Prevention<\/a> (APOP). Many of them are obese, i.e. weighing 15% more than their optimal weight. Unfortunately one of the <strong>biggest obstacles<\/strong> in tackling the problem of dog and pet obesity is the people who should be most concerned about it \u2013 <strong>the owners<\/strong>. There is silence and denial where there should be action. Many owners simply wouldn\u2019t recognize that their dog has a serious weight problem; you hear that \u2018Rufus is just a big dog\u2019, or \u2018she has put on weight, but it\u2019s normal as she has been spayed.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/petobesityprevention.org\/news\/2010\/8\/2\/pet-to-human-weight-translator\"><strong>dog\u2019s weight is expressed in terms of human weight<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> the problem is put in context; it explains why the dog is \u2018fat,\u2019 not \u2018big.\u2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 90 pound female Labrador retriever is equal to a 186 pound 5\u2019 4\u201d female or 217 pound 5\u2019 9\u201d male<\/li>\n<li>105 pound male Golden retriever is equal to a 203 pound 5\u2019 4\u201d female or 237 pound 5\u2019 9\u201d male<\/li>\n<li>12 pound Pomeranian is equal to a 249 pound 5\u2019 4\u201d female or 290 pound 5\u2019 9\u201d male<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many <strong>veterinarians are uncomfortable<\/strong> talking about a pet\u2019s weight for fear of offending the client. It seems weight is a sensitive subject not only to humans, but also to their pets. \u00a0And because weight gain is gradual and subtle, most pet owners fail to appreciate the effect of a few extra pounds gained over a year or two.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Understand the health and other consequences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cObesity continues to be the greatest health threat to dogs and cats.\u201d states APOP Founder, veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward. \u201cObesity is a disease that kills millions of pets prematurely, creates immeasurable pain and suffering, and costs pet owners tens of millions of dollars in avoidable medical costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Obesity causes disorders such as diabetes,\u00a0arthritis,\u00a0high blood pressure,\u00a0kidney disease,\u00a0cancer, and more. However, the <strong>real danger<\/strong> of obesity in pets is <strong>the inflammation<\/strong> the fat causes.
